Hypertension is a chronic condition in which blood pressure is persistently elevated; in adults, hypertension is defined as persistent systolic blood pressure of 140 mmHg or above, or diastolic blood pressure of 90 mmHg or above.
Hypertension usually has no obvious symptoms, but poor control may increase the risk of stroke, coronary heart disease, heart failure, chronic kidney disease and early death.
According to the Department of Health’s Population Health Survey 2020-22, the total prevalence of hypertension among people aged 15 to 84 in Hong Kong was 29.5%, including 12.1% with no self-reported history but raised blood pressure detected by measurement.
Hypertension Care in Primary Care Settings: The Hong Kong Reference Framework recommends continuous, comprehensive and patient-centred care for prevention, early identification and management of hypertension in primary care.
Diet and Nutrition: A healthy eating pattern is recommended, with more fruits, vegetables, whole grains and low-fat foods, and less salt, sodium, saturated fat, sugar and alcohol; daily salt intake should be less than 5 grams, about one teaspoon.
How to Measure Blood Pressure Using a Digital Monitor: Use a calibrated upper-arm electronic blood pressure monitor; sit quietly for at least 5 minutes before measurement, support the arm at heart level, use an appropriate cuff size, stay relaxed and avoid talking during measurement.
Islands DHC Express provides health promotion, health risk assessment and chronic disease management support; eligible persons may receive hypertension screening, follow-up and health management support under the Chronic Disease Co-Care Scheme.
